Justices O’Connor and Kennedy
to Speak
at Federal Judicial Center Conference
Retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor
and Justice Anthony Kennedy are among the keynote speakers
scheduled at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Federal
Judicial Center, hosted by Lewis & Clark Law School Sept.
18 and 19. The conference — also featuring a keynote
address by former Acting U.S. Solicitor General Walter Dellinger — will
cover topics including the impact of science and technology
on the law, balancing national security and individual liberties
in a time of terrorism, and the public’s perception

Play Golf to Make a Difference
Please join the Classroom Law Project’s Senator’s
Cup Golf Tournament, Monday, Oct. 6 at Columbia Edgewater
Country Club in Portland. The tournament will feature 120
players in a scramble format, with special events and an
optional par 3 course. Registration will begin at 10:30
a.m., and the day will finish with a banquet and awards
ceremony beginning at 5:30 p.m. For more information and

The tournament is a fundraiser for the CLP, the nonprofit organization of individuals, lawyers, civic leaders and educators who work together to teach students to be active citizens.

Council on Court Procedures Requests Feedback
The Council on Court Procedures will be publishing
proposed changes to the Oregon Rules of Civil Procedure
(ORCP) for comment after its Sept. 13 meeting. The council
is likely to propose changes to six existing rules. To see
the proposed changes, visit the council’s website
at www.lclark.edu/~ccp/index.htm.
To comment on the proposed rules, send written comments to the council’s executive director, Mark Peterson, Lewis & Clark Legal Clinic, 310 SW 4th Ave, Suite 1018, Portland, OR 97204; fax them to Mark Peterson at (503) 768.6540; or visit the council’s website and click "Contact Us." Comments should be received on or before Dec. 11, 2008, to allow the council to consider the comments fully.
At its Dec. 13meeting the council will discuss the comments and promulgate the final proposals. The legislature may amend, repeal or supplement any of the council’s proposals; if they do not, the proposals go into effect on Jan. 1, 2010.

Oct. 11 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. Each
year, Basic Rights Oregon honors an individual who has made
an outstanding contribution to the lesbian, gay, bisexual
and transgender equality movement in Oregon. This year BRO
has selected Charles Hinkle from Stoel Rives to receive the
2008 Fighting Spirit Award for his leadership in the equality
movement over the past 36 years.
